LAKEWOOD, Wash. — Two Lutes finished inside the top 10 as the Pacific Lutheran University women's golf team battled the elements and a tough field to finish third overall at the Puget Sound Invitational on Sunday at the Oakbrook Golf Club.
"The first day of the tournament we had challenging conditions with inclement weather. High winds, hail, and rain made for a challenge and we didn't end up where we wanted to be. The team came back today showing their grit and resiliency to close the tournament with our lowest daily team score of the year," said interim Head Coach
Caroline Matelski.
"This tournament was truly a team effort, with each member of the team remaining positive. We are looking forward to building on this, and remaining united as we move forward into next week's tournament at the Willamette Valley Cup."
Abby Matelski and
Emily Fisher tied for ninth overall to pace the Lutes, both carding a two-round score of 161. Matelski shot an 86 during Saturday's opening round before shaving off nine strokes on Sunday, turning in a 75 during the final round. Fisher was consistent both days, shooting an 81 on Saturday and an 80 on Sunday.
Ashley Nguyen was 13th with a 173 (89-84), while
Ariana Warren was 18th with a 180 (89-91).
Kathleen Pullin was 20th with a 183 (95-88).
The Lutes shot a 672 as a team for the tournament, finishing in third and one stroke shy of runner-up Pacific University. The Lutes shot a 345 on Saturday before shooting the team's best round of the year on Sunday with a 327. Lewis-Clark State College took top honors, shooting a 621 (314-307). Host University of Puget Sound was a distant fourth, shooting a 721 (364-357).
The Lutes are back in action next weekend, competing at the Willamette Valley Cup in Salem, Oregon.
