SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Kellen Meade and
Stefans Lusis both won events on the track, helping the Pacific Lutheran University men's track & field team open up spring break by finishing third as a team at the Westmont Classic on Saturday.
Kellen Meade had a big day on the track, winning the 200-meter dash in a season-best time of 22.34 seconds and placing second in both the 100-meter dash (11.08) and as a member of the 4x100-meter relay team (43.37) with teammates
Aiden Yost,
Kaimana Satterfield, and
Seth Kramer.
Meade wasn't the only sprinter making noise in California with
Steele Swinton finishing third in the 200-meters with a personal record time of 22.70 while also finishing fifth in the 100-meter dash (11.32).
Grady Lemma won the 400-meter hurdles, making one trip around the oval in 57.58.
In the distance events,
Stefans Lusis won the 3,000-meter steeplechase while
Kai Sorensen,
Ryan Stracke, and
Daniel Zimmer all logged third place showings in their respective events. Lusis won the steeple in 9:49.85 while Zimmer was third in 10:40.10. Sorensen was third in the 800-meters after finishing the two-lap race in 1:55.39 while Stracke finished the mile in 4:13.19.
In the horizontal jumps,
Connor Meade was runner-up in the triple jump with a personal best mark of 43 feet, one inch, while
Seth Kramer was fourth in the long jump with a mark of 21' 10 ¾".
Bridger Hanis cleared a personal best 6' 2 ¾" to finish third in the high jump while in the pole vault,
Aidan Donnelly cleared 13' 5 ¼" to log a fifth place showing.
In the throws,
Micah Ragaza-Bourassa was runner-up in the hammer throw with a toss of 159' 3" while placing fourth in the shot put (43' 6").
Darius Chaffin has his best throw of the season in the javelin, soaring 194' 6" to finish second overall.
"We had a lot of good performances today. It was a good meet and being able to run against some new competition is always a positive," said Head Coach
Trey Henderson.
"The team continues to get better each meet. There were strong performances in each event group which is great to see, We're building a good foundation and need to continue that as we work towards the conference meet."
PLU was third overall at the seven-team meet, scoring 146.5 points. Northwest Conference rival George Fox University won the meet with 205.5 points with host Westmont College (176 points) second in the team standings.
The Lutes return home and compete locally next Saturday, making the quick jaunt across Tacoma to compete at the Peyton Shotwell Invitational.
