SPOKANE, Wash. — Tyler Tanaka secured the victory in the 200-yard individual medley but it wasn't enough to topple Northwest Conference juggernaut Whitworth University on Friday night, falling 159-37 in a dual meet at the Megan Thompson Aquatic Center.
The dual was PLU's first NWC setback of the season, snapping a streak of five straight conference dual wins.
Â
Tanaka was the star of the night, winning the 200-yard individual medley in a time of two minutes, 0.77 seconds. Teammate
Vyron Domingo was hot on his heels, taking second place in 2:01.05.
PLU was runner-up in the 400-yard freestyle relay to close out the night with Tanaka,
Hoskoo Amgalan,
Dylan Dang, and
Elijah Vickery finishing in 3:21.47, edging out the Pirates' B relay team by a split second.
Â
Matthew Jones logged a third place showing in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:43.72) while the 400-yard medley relay squad of Domingo,
Christian Georgi, Dang, and
Anthony James finished third overall in 3:37.64.
"While the scoreline will say otherwise, the Lutes showed more than their swims against the Pirates," said Head Coach
Andrew Lum.
"They showed up for each other, and did such an excellent job of helping to 'fill-in the gaps' whenever it was needed. The support battle was strong, and we're very proud of how they persevered against a very difficult opponent in Whitworth. The team is showing a great level of engagement and intent with each other, and that's going to carry us very far against Whitman and at the NWC Championships in February."

The Lutes return to the pool tomorrow afternoon, squaring off against Whitman College at 1 p.m. in Walla Walla, Washington.Â
