WALLA WALLA, Wash. — 0.31 seconds proved to be the difference between a win and a loss on Saturday afternoon with the Pacific Lutheran University men's swimming team out-sprinting host Whitman College in the final event of the afternoon to sneak away with a 102.5-101.5 dual meet victory.
The Lutes (6-1) won seven events on the day, none more important that the 200-yard freestyle relay to close out the meet. PLU's A team of
Dylan Dang,
Elijah Vickery,
Hoskoo Amgalan, and
Anthony James provided the last second heroics, clocking a time of one minute, 29.07 seconds in the event, edging the host Blues' A team by just 0.31 seconds.
Â
PLU started the meet similar to how it ended it, as the 200-yard medley relay team got things rolling with a victory to start the meet.
Vyron Domingo,
Tyler Tanaka, Dang, and Vickery collaborated to post a winning effort of 1:39.63.
Â
PLU tallied two of the top three spots in the 200-yard freestyle. Tanaka won the event in 1:48.51 with Amgalan touching the wall in third place in 1:51.90.
Â
Anthony James flashed his speed with a victory in the 50-yard freestyle (22.26) before tying for the win in the 100-yard freestyle after clocking an identical time as Whitman's Elliot Yung. Both hit the wall simultaneously in 49.38.Â
Â
Vyron Domingo won the 100-yard backstroke in 54.65 with
Christian Georgi third overall (56.46). Domingo also placed third in the 400-yard individual medley (4:24.03).Â
Â
The Lutes secured the top two places in the 100-yard breaststroke with Tanaka posting a winning effort of 59.33 with Georgi runner-up in 1:00.84.
Â
Dang was second in the 100-yard butterfly in 53.67 while Matthew Jones tallied a runner-up showing in the 500-yard freestyle (5:05.07).Â
"Whitman is always a tough customer, whether they're at home or away. The Blues' energy is infectious, but the Lutes did what they do best— they fed off that energy and channeled it into their own. They took everything that was thrown at them today and returned it with interest," said Head Coach
Andrew Lum.
Â
"The Lutes were always present this year, but today they really arrived! We thank Whitman for providing a challenging and electric environment. I cannot express enough gratitude for the team's belief in themselves and each other, no matter the circumstances. We're very proud of the path they're paving together on the road to the NWC Championships in February."
Â
The Lutes close out their dual meet season next Saturday, hosting crosstown rival University of Puget Sound. Action inside the PLU Pool begins at 1 p.m. with a special senior day ceremony to be held at the conclusion of the meet.Â
