TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University men's swimming squad continued its dominance in the pool, steamrolling Northwest Conference rival Lewis & Clark College on Saturday afternoon.
"It was a great day at the pool," said Head Coach
Matt Sellman. "The team showed great competitive spirit on deck and in the pool. Had some great swims and exciting races, but we're still looking for our good speed. Great to come away with five wins for the first two weekends of competition."
The Lutes kicked off the day with
James Buchanan,
Seth Koivisto,
Phillip Hecksel, and
Hayden Mortensen collaborating to win in the 400-yard medley relay in three minutes, 40.95 seconds. Mortensen won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.92 seconds with
Jacob Goodman close behind in second in 22.61.
Koivisto secure the win in the 200-yard individual medley (2:04.67) with
Jonah Benigno coming in second (2:09.10). Charlie Cutter prevailed in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.24) with teammates Hecksel (2:06.84) and Jeff Lozensky (2:09.74) claiming second and third in the event.
Mortensen and
Elijah Singstad went one-two in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking times of 48.46 and 29.28.
James Buchanan led the charge in the 200-yard backstroke, winning in 2:08.02 with Benigno (2:09.57) and Goodman (2:09.70) placing second and third.
Jerome Bradley won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:05.94 while the Lutes logged another 1-2-3 showing in the 200-yard breaststroke. Koivisto won the race in 2:18.63 with Lozensky (2:20.39) and Sam Kawakami (2:21.16) hot on his heels.
PLU wrapped up the day with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay with Singstad, Goodman, Jerome, and Hecksel touching the wall in 3:20.02.
"We're looking forward to working really hard to get better and faster in the next few weeks as we head towards the end of the fall semester."
The Lutes are back in the pool on Nov. 17, facing NWC newcomer George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon.
