TACOMA, Wash. -Â The Pacific Lutheran University women's swimming team showed off its depth on Saturday afternoon, winning five events in a nailbiting 106-99 dual meet victory over Division II University of Alaska.

"The meet was great, we had some big performances from a lot of women that made it possible for us to win," said Head Coach
Matt Sellman. "I think it's our first win over a higher division opponent since I've been here and that's always something to be excited about."

First-year
Claire Cranch led the way for the Lutes (4-0), winning both the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle. Cranch touched the wall in two minutes, 15.22 seconds to win the 200 IM with
Jenna Muller (2:19.86) and
Alex Shannon (2:21.06) placing second and third, respectively. In the 500 free, Cranch blew away the competition, winning by over eight seconds with a time of 5:20.54 seconds.Â

Bailey Hamilton prevailed in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 2:01.79 with
Victoria Nguyenle placing third in 2:04.40.
Lauren Kearney secured top billing in the 100-yard freestyle (57.17_ with
Maya Lovre placing third (59.74) while
Kiyomi Kishaba won the 100-yard backstroke in 59.78 with Shannon claiming third in 1:03.55.

Collecting runner-up finishes was the PLU 200-yard medley relay team (1:51.93), Kearney in the 50-yard freestyle (26.17), Hamilton in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.52), and Nguyenle in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The PLU men conducted an intrasquad meet at the same time with Ethan Trieu winning three events on the day.

"It was a fun way to get into competition in the new year. The men swam an intrasquad and we had a lot of fun with the matchups we put together. We had some strong swims and fun races. They really had a good time as a team."

The Lutes are back in action on Friday, hosting Northwest Conference rival Whitworth University at 6 p.m.Â
