FOREST GROVE, Ore. - The Pacific Lutheran University women's swimming team won 10 events on Saturday afternoon, overwhelming host Pacific University 155-38 to capture the program's sixth consecutive Northwest Conference dual meet title.
"The team had a lot of fun today," said Head Coach
Matt Sellman. "Most swam fun races they don't always have the opportunity to compete in and we saw some strong times. The relays were a lot of fun, we matched them up and had some great races."
The Lutes (8-0, 7-0 NWC) set the tone early, securing the top three spots in the 200-yard medley relay to begin the meet.
Whitney Mundle,
Lauren Kearney,
Lindsay Smith, and
Victoria Nguyenle combined for the win, touching the wall in 1:57.32 with a team of
Alex Shannon,
Jenna Muller,
Kiyomi Kishaba, and
Tori Oshiro finishing just four tenths of a second behind.
Mundle won the 1,650-yard freestyle in decisive fashion, touching the wall in 19:57.74 while
Hannah VanHeyningen led a 1-2-3 Lute finish in the 200-yard freestyle. VanHeyningen touched the wall in 2:03.98 with Shannon runner-up in 2:05.45 while
Bridget Duven was third in 2:13.83.
Bailey Hamilton took the 50-yard freestyle in 26.24 with
Sidney Chan-Orcutt (26.49) and Kishaba (27.62) in hot pursuit, finishing second and third, respectively.
Kishaba won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.87 with VanHeyningen in second (1:02.72) and Shannon in third (1:05.26). Nguyenle (58.68), Smith (1"01.95), and
Allie Burke (1:02.57) went 1-2-3 in the 100-yard freestyle while
Maya Lovre (1:05.17),
Reina Kim (1:05.92), and Oshiro (1:08.39) claimed the top three spots in the 100-yard backstroke.
Muller won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:34.90 while Kearney claimed the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:11.90. PLU closed the meet with another top three sweep with the 200-yard medley relay team of Mundle, Nguyenle,
Tess Ritcey, and Muller clocking a winning time of 1:45.72.
The Lutes close out the dual meet season on Feb. 1, facing crosstown rival University of Puget Sound at 1 p.m.
